Does ‘Rakta Chandan’ from Pushpa 2 actually exist in real life?

Pushpa 2 box office collection is making global headlines. The Indian film entered its Day 8 in theatres on December 12. It has already raked in a staggering Rs 1,062 crores globally, entering the Rs 1,000 crore club in just six days of release.

Film enthusiasts and experts are closely monitoring the film’s box office collection to see if it can surpass Dangal’s Rs 2,070.3 crore lifetime global collection to become the highest-grossing Indian film of all time.

But this article is going to highlight a different thing connected to the Pushpa series. Both films (Pushpa: The Rise and Pushpa: The Rule) are set against the backdrop of Rakta Chandan smuggling. The protagonist has become the leader of a high-profile smuggling gang.

Let’s understand ‘Rakta Chandan’ from Pushpa series

Does Rakta Chandan actually exist in real life? It does. The Pterocarpus santalinus has common names of red sanders, red saunders and Yerra Chandanam. It is red in colour and has so many good benefits, such as in medicines, antique goods and cosmetics.

Rakta Chandan is totally different from the regular chandan or sandal used in our homes. The regular one is aromatic. But the bark of Rakta Chandan does not carry any smell, but is red in colour. It is endemic to India and can only be found in the Seshachalam Hills.

Rakta Chandan has been listed as an endangered species by the IUCN, mainly because of intense exploitation of its timber. It is not used in India on that high scale. But the timber is incredibly popular internationally, used for furnitures and medicines.
