Decarbonisation in commercial transport: UAE’s Road2.0 initiative fuels transition to zero emission vehicles

Climate change is one of the most important environmental issues at global levels, and the UAE has been giving considerable attention to it. The country has exerted numerous efforts to its potential impacts on ecosystems and economic sectors.

The UAE hosted the COP28 Summit last November, convening thousands of people to the climate conference. The event facilitated the operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund and concluded in the UAE Consensus that calls for a just transition to clean energy.

6,000 zero emission vehicles to grace UAE roads soon

The UAE’s Road2.0 initiative – backed by the UAE alliance for climate action – has unveiled its declaration, underscoring a significant push for zero emission vehicles (ZEVs). This marks a step in demonstrating robust corporate demand for EV adoption across commercial fleets.

The initiative includes 17 pioneering signatories, including Unilever, Chalhoub Group, Kibsons, Nestle and Schneider Electric. These entities span a number of different sectors and seek to decarbonise their fleets by 30% by 2030 and 100% by 2040.

Their vehicle needs cover a broad range, starting from refrigerated trucks and electric buses to light-to-medium-duty vehicles. Road2.0 supports the UAE in driving economic progress, fostering innovation and addressing environmental and societal challenges.

By 2030, up to 6,000 zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) are expected to grace UAE roads, focusing on a potential expansion to 20,000 by 2040. The UAE’s Road2.0 initiative lures efforts from different sectors, reinforcing the country’s climate objectives.

UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy for a sustainable future

The UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy is designed to act as a stimulus for economic and societal advancement by leading the transition to net zero emissions. It is expected to create 200,000 job opportunities, contribute to the national GDP and enhance export opportunities.

The strategy has more than 25 programmes across six key sectors, such as transport, industry and agriculture. These programmes focus on enhancing efficiency, expanding clean energy utilisation, incorporating nature-based solutions and using carbon capture technologies.
