Cracks in Greenland ice sheet expanding faster than expected

The Greenland ice sheet is the second-largest body of ice on the planet. But a recent study published in Nature has highlighted that the sheet is cracking more rapidly than anything seen in the past as a response to the climate crisis.

Climate change is being blamed for a number of different problems, including natural disasters and unprecedented temperature rises. This largely anthropogenic crisis is also being held responsible for the expansion of cracks in the Greenland ice sheet.

In the period from 2016 and 2021, researchers used 8,000 three-dimensional surface maps from high-resolution commercial satellite imagery to assess the state of cracks in the surface of the ice sheet. The problem needs to be tackled as early as possible.
