Could Manuka honey be a standalone treatment for breast cancer?

Researchers have found that Manuka honey could be an alternative, natural option for breast cancer prevention and treatment – especially for estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer, the most common subtype accounting for 70-80% of all breast cancer cases.

There is a need for alternative treatments to help prevent the development of endocrine resistance – a leading factor contributing to breast cancer being one of the most deadly conditions across the globe – and improve breast cancer survival.

Manuka honey a natural option for breast cancer treatment

Manuka honey has long been prominent for its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. It is also rich in compounds like complex carbohydrates, vitamins, amino acids, minerals, phytochemicals and flavonoids. These compounds have demonstrated anticancer potential.

In order to understand the potential of Manuka honey as a natural option for breast cancer prevention and treatment, researchers conducted a series of experiments in mice and in some of the most common types of breast cancer.

The team found that Manuka honey considerably reduced tumor progression in mice having ER-positive breast cancer cells by 84% – and did not affect normal breast cells or cause any significant side effects, according to a report by Science Daily.

Natural, less toxic alternative to traditional chemotherapy

The latest findings suggest that Manuka honey could be developed into a natural supplement or even a standalone treatment for one of the most common subtypes of breast cancer. It could be particularly helpful in cases of patients experiencing resistance to traditional therapies.

Dr Diana Marquez-Garban, the study’s first author and associate professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, said: “The findings provide hope for development of a natural, less toxic alternative to traditional chemotherapy.” But more research is necessary.
