Climate partnership in focus as UAE Embassy in the US kicks off journey to 7 US cities in 7 days
Hussein El Gaafary of the UAE Embassy in the US has embarked on a seven-day US tour in Boulder & Vegas, meeting counterparts to discuss green business opportunities, sustainable food production and clean energy, as per an X post.
His visit to seven cities across the US in seven days highlights the prominent UAE-US cooperation to protect the environment and build a sustainable future. Both countries are building on many years of strong bilateral relations to tackle climate change together.
UAE-US partnership instrumental during COP28 Dubai
The UAE hosted the annual COP28 Summit at Expo City Dubai last November. As the host, the Gulf state and the US government and partners across sectors coordinated closely to organise an ambitious and inclusive climate conference.
The event noted an important success on its first day itself as participants agreed to operationalise the Loss and Damage Fund to compensate vulnerable countries for consequences of climate change. They also called for clean energy transition.
The UAE-US climate cooperation became an instrumental factor in delivering results at the COP28 Summit. The then US Climate Envoy John Kerry and the UAE leader mobilised strong international action to reduce methane emissions globally.
In addition, AIM for Climate garnered $17 billion and enlisted 600 global partners to make food more sustainable, the UAE’s clean energy company Masdar expanded plans for investments in the US, and the Gates Foundation and UAE government directed more resources.
UAE-US cooperate on making food production sustainable
The UAE and US lead the Agriculture Innovation Mission (AIM) for Climate together. The expanding coalition of 600 partners and 55 nations has a considerable focus on enhancing food security and making farming and food production more environmentally friendly.
The climate crisis continues to impact global atmospheric conditions. Longstanding agricultural practices are undermined, pushing a number of farmers into poverty. Subsequently, the increasing global population is more reliant on vulnerable food production.
Other instances of UAE, US fighting climate change together
In other vital UAE-US cooperation on different environmental concerns, the Gulf state has provided critical funding to address the coral bleaching crisis in the Florida Keys. There is the COP28 Local Climate Action Summit too, bringing both countries together.
In March 2023, the then US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and COP28 President Designate Dr Sultan al-Jaber met in the US to discuss opportunities for raising climate ambition and accelerating climate action on the road to COP28
