Climate change intensifies: Dangerous temperatures could kill 50% more people in Europe
There is a possibility that dangerous temperatures are going to kill 50% more people in Europe by 2100, a recent study has found. It has also been estimated that the number of people killed by stronger heat could be higher than those saved by milder cold.
Under the hottest possible scenario, the planet is likely to see a net increase of 80,000 temperature-related deaths a year. But under the most optimistic scenario for cutting carbon emissions, the number is likely to reach 8,000 people per year.
These findings challenge the idea of some people that global heating is good for society as a lesser number of people are going to lose their lives to the cold. Heat and cold are silent killers that hurt the body before they reach extremes that cause heatstroke and hypothermia.
