The raging climate emergency is fast moving and often unpredictable. In the coming years, the international community must make progress in the crucial areas of mitigation, finance and adaptation to keep the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold alive.
This year alone, people of Bangladesh endured punishing temperature rises and power cuts. Thousands of schools had to remain closed for a sizeable duration. 55 people got killed in flooding in August and thousands were uprooted from their homes.
Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan In Focus
The country is responsible for just 0.47% of global emissions, yet it has been ranked the seventh most vulnerable to climate change. For years, authorities have been investing in strategies to grow the economy as well as adapt to the seismic effects of the climate crisis.
Through the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan, Bangladesh has set out methods to transform its society and embrace climate resilience. Its energy transition involves improving renewable energy capacity to 30% by 2030, developing sustainable agriculture and modernising grids.
Today, the authorities continue to build mangrove forests, sea walls and flood defences. Satellites help track climate-induced disasters and alert residents of the approaching danger. Climate disaster mitigation is a crucial part of the national adaptation plan.
COP28 Paved The Way For Historic Deals
But Bangladesh’s bold strategy needs bolder investment. It is important that climate finance meets three essential criteria: funding must be adequate, routine and accessible. The international community must act in solidarity to effectively confront the challenge.

Participants at the recently-concluded COP28 Summit in Dubai reached a historic agreement on the first day of the event itself to operationalise the Loss and Damage Fund. In addition, leaders also agreed to transition away from fossil fuels in the final text.
