Climate change and nuclear arms in focus: Doomsday Clock set at 89 seconds to midnight
The Doomsday Clock represents the gap humanity and global disaster share at the moment. In a concerning change, the clock has been set at 89 seconds to midnight as concerns rise about climate change, nuclear arms and public health.
The change occurred on January 28. It should be taken as a sharp indication of extreme danger. The change comes as US President Donald Trump returned to his office on January 20. Is a global disaster imminent?
The science-oriented group responsible for creating the Doomsday Clock originally set it at 7 minutes to midnight in 1947. The last change before yesterday’s one happened back in 2022 as the group set the clock at 90 seconds to midnight after Russian troops marched into Ukraine.
In a statement, the group highlighted that it hopes that global leaders recognise the seriousness of the situation and take bold action to reduce the threats posed by nuclear arms, climate change and the potential misuse of biological science and modern technology.
