Climate change and geopolitics: Urgent action needed to ensure UK food security

Urgent action is needed to secure the UK’s food supply in the face of the climate crisis, the imposition of tariffs and global insecurity, according to a report. Days after US President Donald Trump returned to office, the report said the UK’s food security is in a precarious state.

8 years after the Brexit poll, the UK still had no coherent food policy, despite the fact that nearly a third of the country’s food still comes from the EU. The report’s author, Tim Lang, has called for legislation to ensure the state is obliged to feed the public in a time of crisis.

Increased domestic production is the need of the hour. On top of that, the focus should also be on changes to food distribution systems, the introduction of food resilience education exchanges, and research into current thinking around stockpiling and rationing.
