Check out BJP and Congress’ focus on climate action as India election 2024 begins

Billed by India’s ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a milestone to 2047 and the Opposition as a fight for democracy’s survival, Lok Sabha polls 2024 began today. In the first of the seven-phase general election, voting is being held across 21 states and Union Territories.

The mammoth election is being regarded as the largest democratic exercise across the globe, involving more than 969 million voters or 10% of the global population. The voting began at 8 am as polling opened at 102 constituencies across India.

The exercise is set to continue until June 1 and all the results are expected to be counted and declared in June 4. But it is no doubt that the election is being held at a time of unprecedented temperature surges across the country, due to both climate change and El Nino influence.

BJP and Congress’ resolve to fight climate change

1. BJP’s vision

Central to the ruling party’s resolve to fight climate change is the ambitious goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2070. It emphasises the expansion of non-fossil fuel capacity, embracing sustainable energy sources for the sake of the planet.

Simultaneously, the BJP is committed to revitalise rivers, protect the Himalayas and develop coastal climate resilience. It is also prioritises promoting sustainable living practices, improving water management and bolstering disaster resilience.

2. Congress’ vision

Central to the Opposition party’s approach to addressing climate change and promoting environmental sustainability is establishing an independent Environment Protection and Climate Change Authority to monitor and enforce environmental standards.

There is its flagship initiative, Green New Deal Investment Programme, to promote clean energy, sustainable infrastructure and green job creation. The party also seeks to improve air quality, prevent the discharge of effluents into rivers and protect forests and coastal zones.
