Can climate cafes help ease fear of environmental doom?

According to the United Nations, Climate Change refers to long term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. The shifts can be natural due to the change in Sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions on the face of the Earth or on the sea bed. But since the 1800s, human induced climate change has been the main reason for rising temperatures and greenhouse gases.

Climate Cafes: What is it?

To resolve these issues, climate cafes are opening. The cafes are open inclusive spaces where the public can come together for having a discussion on these serious matters. These cafes are community led, and are informal in nature where everyone is welcome to join the conversation. This helps in increasing involvement of the masses and helps spreading awareness among people belonging to all ages. The cafes have a bright and positive environment.

Role in inducing environmental discussions

The Climate Cafe concept was taken from the Death Cafes that were crafted by Swiss Sociologists Jon Underwood and Sue Barsky Reid for having open conversations about grief and sadness.

Climate Cafes were developed looking at the same concept. They are an effective way of talking about the environment as people gather without hindrance of race, caste and creed. Everyone is welcome there and there is no political inclination to be a member of the cafes. The cafe’s members range from locals to international audiences and talk about climate change issues mitigation.

How to start a Climate Cafe

Climate cafes do not have a physical presence. It’s a community that meets in various cafes that have a good ambience and agrees to host the community. If there is no cafe that agrees to the proposal, the discussion is usually done at community halls, or exhibition halls, town halls or church halls depending on the availability.

If anyone wants to start a community then they should get registered with the worldwide community first and inform them about the details and particulars about the members, size of the community members and other necessary information. Once it is done, the cafes are ready to begin their operations. They get the official Climate cafe logo and resources after registration.
