California fires: Impacted residents call on fossil fuel industry to pay for damages
The raging fires in California have killed many people and destroyed acres of land. Residents impacted by some of the major fires, such as the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, are taking aim at the industry most responsible for climate change.
It is none other than the fossil fuel industry. Impacted people are calling for litigation and policies that could force big oil to pay for damages. In the coming days, politicians in California are expected to introduce legislation keeping this call in mind.
Scientists are trying to determine the scale of damages during California fires caused by climate change. But existing researches make it clear that global heating is creating conditions for more serious and frequent fires.
Recently, climate scientists also reached the conclusion that the climate crisis is likely responsible for a quarter of the dryness that fuelled the raging fires’ rapid spread. Keep an eye out for more information.
