Beavers in danger: PM Donald Tusk blames the ecosystem engineers for Poland floods
Polish PM Tusk believes that beavers are partly to blame for the floods going on in the country as they damage dams. He said this in a statement the day before yesterday, on Monday Sept 23 during a speech at a meeting of the crisis headquarters in Wroclaw.
“Sometimes you have to choose between the love of animals and safety of cities, villages, and stability of dams”, he said, giving hints of shifting the animals. At the same time, he believes that actions against beavers must be legal. It was noted that the protection of dams from digging animals is a priority for the authorities.
The flooding in Poland started heavily on Sept 15, 2024. Because of the heavy rains, that led to the worsening of the situation, the nation had to introduce a red alert and give in to disaster mode. The next day saw the evacuation of 1100 people from the households in the flood hit regions by the military in the south of Poland. The evacuation was carried out with the help of helios (helicopters), boats and rescue vehicles. On Sept 21, the damage from the floods reported amounted to over $1 billion.
