Trump Administration’s Shift to Fossil Fuels: What It Means for US Energy Policy

The Trump administration is suspending renewable energy grants and turning its focus towards increased fossil fuel development. In particular, the Department of Energy (DOE) has canceled two grants worth almost $6.8 million to RMI, a clean energy think tank with one aimed at retrofitting low income housing for energy efficiency and the other studying models for electric vehicle car sharing.
These cancellations are part of a larger review of 300 projects including wind, solar and battery storage funded in accordance with President Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure law. Moreover, the Environmental Protection Agency canceled $20 billion in clean energy funding, though a federal judge halted that decision.
Opponents claim this change will increase energy prices, slow job growth and hinder climate progress. In spite of this worldwide renewable energy installations reached record levels in 2024 with China taking the lead. The DOE continues to stand by its actions as being in the best interests of Americans.
