Embarking on the Threshold of Change Pre- COP 28

In the crescendo leading to COP28, the global stage has witnessed a symphony of voices, each chord resonating with urgency and determination. Recent high-level summits have become crucibles of ideas, sparking discussions that could shape the future of our planet. As world leaders, policymakers, and visionaries converge, the spotlight is on unraveling the intricate tapestry of climate agendas that will define the path forward.

The meeting is going to be held in UAE, so some responsible leaders like Dr. Sultan Al Jaber are in the headlines. His notable voice was when Dr. Sultan Al Jaber spoke of listening to all voices. As we all support the environment is not a regional principle, climate change is not a regional issue, and the climate crisis will not affect any region on Earth. Mother Earth is a global issue.

The cooperation and ideas of all nations are remarkable. The upcoming COP-28 is giving us a heightened sense of focus, we will see the world coming together on one platform to save Mother Earth!

Unveiling Agendas Of COP 28: A Tapestry of Global Priorities

The 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference will begin in the United Arab Emirates in a week. As reports and news focus on the “unusually” busy agenda. But apart from the UAE with UN giving us a strong message COP28 will be a transformative moment for the UAE and the world to unite and deliver realistic solutions for climate actions and mother earth.

One of the most extensive engagement and listening tours of any presidency, the COP28 Presidency held the first open consultation for the two-week agenda. Maintaining 1.5°C is its Action Agenda’s North Star.

We must cut 22 gigatons of emissions by 2030, according to the GST. We need swift action at COP28 to meet these 2030 goals.

The COP28 Presidency’s Action Plan focused on fast-tracking a just and orderly energy transition, fixing climate finance, focusing on people, nature, lives, and livelihoods, and fostering inclusivity.

These summits, more than mere gatherings, stand as beacons of hope and determination. The discussions emanating from these high-level meetings are a tapestry woven with threads of urgency, empathy, and a collective commitment to address the climate crisis. From examining the nexus between human rights and climate action to navigating the challenges of climate-induced migration, the agendas explored are as diverse as the regions they aim to protect.

The UAE’s multifaceted approach, blending innovation with climate resilience, mirrors a deep-seated emotional connection to safeguarding the planet’s future. Their commitment reflects not only national responsibility but a profound understanding of the global emotional stakes.

The Heartbeat of Climate Justice

Amidst the discussions, the heartbeat of climate justice echoes profoundly. Leaders emphasize the imperative of not just mitigating environmental impacts but ensuring equity in the face of climate adversity. The call to prioritize vulnerable populations and marginalized communities resounds in these deliberations, setting the stage for a COP28 that champions inclusivity and empathy.

Unity in Diversity: A Global Coalition for Change

The strength of these discussions lies in the unity found within diversity. Global leaders, activists, and influencers bring their unique perspectives to the table, fostering a coalition where the power of collective action reverberates. It is not merely about acknowledging differences but leveraging them as strengths in the pursuit of a common goal — safeguarding our planet for future generations.

As calls for unity echo on the international stage Dr. Al Jaber’s impassioned plea at recent summits highlighted the necessity of a united front in delivering impactful climate action for raising the earth’s temperature, to prevent global warming from crossing 1.5 degree limit, energy transition, financial issues, and ‘work with nature’.  These are key agendas we received from the stage of Pre-COP 28.

“We must find common ground, ensure consensus, and resolve differences. If we succeed in coming together now, we have a huge opportunity in front of all of us. We can reimagine entire economies and put every nation on the path to a prosperous and sustainable future,” Dr Al Jaber said at the pre-COP event. He continued by saying  “As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. In such challenging times, our responsibility is only greater. Now more than ever, we need to unite on climate and deliver a clear message of hope, a message of solidarity, stability, and prosperity.”

While talking about climate change mitigation, the UAE Special Envoy said: “We need rapid progress to deliver a 43% cut in emissions by 2030 – that is exactly what the science is telling us. This starts with a forward-looking GST that will shape economy-wide NDCs [Nationally Determined Contributions] with absolute emission reduction targets that address all greenhouse gases. This can only work if we implement a fair, responsible, and just energy transition based on equity.” From here many debates will arise shortly, we are keeping an eye on it.

We cannot ignore the words of the host country UAE,

“My friends, it is time for all of us to get to work,” “Every day that passes, every moment we waste, we make our task even harder and more complex. Everybody must use this time wisely. Let’s have the difficult conversations now – don’t delay. Let’s show flexibility, and build mutual trust.”

“The world is watching. Our nations, our communities, our families, and our kids, are all watching. I will roll up my sleeves and be by your side. Together, let us show that humanity can find solidarity again. Let’s unite, let’s act, and let us deliver in Dubai.”

The minister of the COP-28 host country UAE said that COP28 must deliver a robust GST with a strong mitigation outcome, a comprehensive adaptation agreement, and innovative solutions on climate finance, which must include funding arrangements for the Loss and Damage Fund.

As we stand on the precipice of COP28, these recent high-level summits become the prologue to a pivotal chapter in our fight against climate change.
