Urban Heat at Night in New York City: Areas Most Affected

New York City is no stranger to heat waves, but in 2026, a growing concern is not just daytime temperatures, but how hot the city stays at night. Known as the urban heat island effect, this phenomenon causes certain neighbourhoods to retain heat long after sunset, making nights uncomfortable and, in some cases, dangerous.

Understanding where this impact is strongest and why can help residents stay safer and better prepared.

Why Nights Stay Hot in New York City

The primary reason for increased nighttime temperatures is the urban heat island effect. Radiation, which keeps buildings cool, is not as effective at removing heat during winter months due to the amount of heat buildings store. Therefore, the intensive building design in New York creates additional challenges in keeping cool. The other factor contributing to the urban heat island effect in New York is that there are limited amounts of green space available in the city to provide additional natural cooling.

Tall Buildings: Reduced air circulation between the tops of adjacent buildings traps heat in the space between them.

A.C. Waste Heat: A.C. units discharge waste heat back to the environment.

Areas Most Affected by Nighttime Heat

Contrary to most other neighbourhoods throughout NYC – different parts of the city have vastly differing exposures to nighttime heat; these differences primarily arise from two characteristics of NYC’s neighbourhoods: Infrastructure (how buildings are concentrated and organized) Urban Design (the characteristics of streets and public spaces)

1. South Bronx

South Bronx has extreme levels of nighttime heat from its extremely high density of buildings, limited natural vegetation covering, and extensive amounts of industrial activity present within the neighbourhood that does not provide cooling effects by not having an open, unencumbered, cooling effect.

2. Central Brooklyn (Bedford-Stuyvesant & Crown Heights)

The inability for older residential buildings to have natural ventilation with many fewer trees than in other parts of Brooklyn contributes to elevated temperatures due to diminished cooling at nighttime.

3. Upper Manhattan (Washington Heights & Harlem)

Limited airflow created from layouts of buildings and their densities create elevations of heat overnight which inhibit nighttime cooling efficiencies.

4. Certain Areas Across Queens (Jamaica and other locales featuring industrial zones)

Typical materials generally found in industrial zones also act as heat storage devices, storing daytime heat then releasing the stored heat at night.

Why It Matters: Health and Daily Life

The significance of nighttime heat lies in its relationship to physical health and everyday lifestyles.

High nightly temperatures have the following three effects:

1. The human body cannot recover from daytime heat stress.

2. Poor quality of sleep leads to increased levels of fatigue and other health consequences for all people.

3. Those at greater risk for adverse effects from nighttime heat are the very young, very old, and the economically disadvantaged.

Final Insight

In conclusion, New York City is facing an ongoing urban heat problem at night that is also unevenly distributed throughout the city. Residents who live in areas with a higher density of buildings and a lack of street trees and green spaces will be more severely affected by the heat, particularly during hot weather and heatwaves.

FAQs

1. What is the urban heat island effect?

It is when cities retain more heat than surrounding areas due to concrete, buildings, and reduced greenery.

2. Which areas in NYC are most affected at night?

The South Bronx, Central Brooklyn, Upper Manhattan, and parts of Queens.

3. Why is nighttime heat dangerous?

Because the body does not get time to cool down, increasing health risks.

4. How much hotter can NYC be at night?

Some areas can be 5–10°C warmer than nearby rural regions.
