Rainfall Questions Grow: Indonesia Landslide Leaves Dozens Missing

As Indonesia Landslide Leaves Dozens Missing, experts examine how climate may be amplifying rainfall patterns and intensifying severe weather across the country.

A pre-dawn landslide in Indonesia’s West Java has left dozens missing after days of heavy rain triggered a slope collapse in West Bandung district. Authorities said the slide struck Pasir Langu village in Cisarua, killing at least eight people and leaving about 82 others unaccounted for as Saturday’s search continued. Officials cautioned that the missing tally may shift as reports are verified. Mud, rocks, and uprooted trees buried roughly 34 homes, while damaged roads slowed access for heavy equipment.

Search Operations Focus on Survival, Then Recovery

Rescue workers, police, and volunteers used excavators where possible, then switched to shovels and hands in tight areas. Officials said at least two dozen residents managed to escape, but many families were separated in the chaos and darkness.

Continued rain and unstable ground kept forcing teams to pause, and responders warned that fresh movement on the hillside could put rescuers at risk. BNPB has been publishing situation updates and field visuals, including this official BNPB Instagram update.

How Climate May Be Amplifying Rainfall

Climate scientists note that warmer air holds more moisture, which can increase the chance of intense downpours. For landslide-prone hillsides, that often means faster soil saturation, weaker grip, and rapid failure, especially where roads, cuttings, or past land clearing have already changed drainage.

Indonesia’s weather agency also warned of extreme conditions this week, and similar heavy-rain events have already driven deadly flooding elsewhere, including North Sulawesi earlier this month.
